We Can Work It Out by Elizabeth Eulberg

When Penny Lane started the Lonely Hearts Club, the goal was simple: to show that girls didn’t need to define themselves by how guys looked at them, and didn’t have to value boyfriends over everything else. Penny thought she’d be an outcast for life… but then the club became far more popular than she ever imagined it would be.

But what happens when the girl who never thought she’d date a good guy suddenly finds herself dating a great one? She doesn’t need a boyfriend…but she wants it to work out with thus particular boyfriend. And he wants it to work out with her.

Only, things keep getting in the way. Feelings keep getting hurt. Words keep getting misunderstood.

Penny Lane worked hard to declare her independence. Now she needs to figure out what to do with it – and how to balance what she wants with what everyone else wants. In We Can Work It Out, Elizabeth Eulberg returns to the world of her first novel, The Lonely Hearts Club, and gets to the heart of how hard relationships can be…and why sometimes they are worth all the drama and comedy they create.

Exclusive interview with the author:

1) No matter how many books you write, I’m sure each one has it’s own challenges. How was this book more challenging to write than your others? How was it easier?

It was easier in that I was working with characters that I already knew so well, so that process of figuring out characters already happened when I wrote The Lonely Hearts Club. The challenge was in writing a sequel – nobody told me how hard sequels can be! As much as I relished the opportunity to revisit these characters, for the first time ever, I froze while writing. I was writing something where there would already be expectations in place. Readers would have an idea of where they wanted the story to go and I knew I was going in a certain direction that might not be what they had in mind. But at the end of the day, I stuck to what I knew was best for the story and I’m really glad I did.

2) Do you follow any specific rules or guidelines while writing?

My biggest rule is to SIT DOWN AND WRITE. That may seem like an obvious one, but nobody is going to write that book except for you. I hear from so many aspiring writers about wanting to write and there are always excuses (I don’t know what I’m doing, I don’t have time, etc.). I had no clue what I was doing when I wrote my first book and it took me five years and 17 drafts, but I didn’t give up. I kept at it. I have that attitude with every book I write. I give myself a goal for the day or week, and I get it done (there are some exceptions to that, but it’s pretty rare, especially as I have deadlines now!). I’m a big believer in just getting things down and then going back and revising. Some people revise as they go, it’s what works best for you. But you’re not going to figure out what works best for you if you don’t SIT DOWN AND WRITE.

3) Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what do you like to listen to?

I always listen to music when I write (or do pretty much anything). For Penny Lane Bloom’s world, I listen exclusively to The Beatles since they play a huge part of her life. Now whenever I hear a certain Beatles song, it will take me back to a particular scene from her life.

4) What book are you currently reading or what was the last book you read?

I’m currently reading The Winner’s Crime, the second book in the Winner’s trilogy from Marie Rutkoski. It’s so good! I just finished reading Carrie Ryan’s upcoming novel, Daughter of Deep Silence. I got an advance reading copy and I’m official OBSESSED with it.

5) What’s up next for you?

I’m writing a middle grade series, which has been a blast. The first book in The Great Shelby Holmes series will come out in fall 2016. I reimagined Sherlock Holmes as a prickly nine-year-old girl named Shelby and my Watson is a friendly 11-year-old boy. They are a ton of fun. And I just starting writing what will hopefully become my next young adult novel this week, but it’s way too soon to talk about that!

About the author:

Elizabeth Eulberg wishes that she would’ve thought of The Lonely Hearts Club when she was just seventeen (you know what we mean). Instead, she had to rely on her love of music to help her get through stupid boy shenanigans. She still has to listen to a lot of music. She also gets her strength (some would call it revenge) by writing books – many books (The Lonely Hearts Club, Prom & Prejudice, Take a Bow, Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality, and Better Off Friends). You can find Elizabeth at Sir Paul and Ringo concerts, as well as online at ElizabethEulberg.com and @ElizEulberg on Twitter.
