About the Book:

When singer Julia MacAllistair sits down at a piano in her attic to play one of her late great-grandmother’s favorite pieces of music, she doesn’t expect to wake up on the floor of a Chicago concert hall in 1906, dressed in period costume with a sea of concerned faces peering down at her.

How did she get there? How will she return to her present day life? Why has this happened?

In her stunning and epic new novel, writer T. E. Scott weaves a rich tapestry of intrigue, danger and romance across time and continents, as Julia MacAllistair discovers who she really is, how her future depends on escaping the tragedy of her past, and what happens when the music stops…

Exclusive interview with the author:

1) We’re always curious about where ideas come from. How much comes from your own life experiences?

Well, I certainly have no experience with time-travel (although it’s been my secret wish since I was a child), but I wanted to somehow allow music to dictate the direction of my main character. I’ve spent my life immersed in the musical world, so naturally, music infuses what I write. I also happen to live in one of the most spectacular parts of the world…New Zealand. It is a place of vast beauty…a young country built upon people’s sweat and labor. I find their stories and histories very inspiring. And yes, I’ve eaten sheep testicles, an experience I really don’t wish to repeat. You’ll have to read the book to understand that one!

2) Is there a soundtrack/playlist for your novel? If so, please share!

The whole story is built upon music, for it is the songs that lead Julia through her journey. I studied classical music throughout my youth/University years, but I’ve always loved Jazz. It was a genre that simply made sense to me…that Golden Age of music with the rich, smooth voices of people like Sinatra and Ella…lyrics and melodies from Gershwin, Porter, and Berlin. These are pieces of music that inspire…that take the listener into another realm. That’s the beauty of music. It’s always a journey.

3) What is one interesting fact about you?

I met my now-husband when he was five and I was eight. My family had moved from the States to New Zealand in the early 80s and our families became fast friends. We moved back to the US six years later, visiting NZ occasionally over the following years. Twenty years later, the young, blond childhood friend of my brother appeared on my Texas doorstep. He was slightly more appealing, I must admit. After a quick engagement, we were married and moved back to the green land of my childhood where we now run a little farm and wrangle our two children.

4) The Song Journey is a great title! Who came up with it? Was it the original title or did it change along the way?

The title did change along the way. I had always had the title, A Life’s Tempo, in mind for the book, but after working with my editor and doing some audience surveys, we determined that The Song Journey more accurately conveyed the intent of the story…a journey through time, music, and history. A Life’s Tempo still symbolically represents much about Julia’s journey, but perhaps isn’t compelling enough for someone to pick it up off of a random bookshelf.

5) If your book were to be turned into a movie, who would your dream cast be?

I’m not sure who would fill all of the character roles, but I remember hearing Emmy Rossum sing ‘A Sentimental Journey’ and thinking, ‘Wow! Didn’t expect that!’ Gorgeous voice and very good actor. She’d fit the role of Julia well. As for Etty, perhaps Patti Page or Judy Garland, if they were still alive. First and foremost, however, they must be singers.

About the author:

T.E. Scott has spent the last 13 years in New Zealand…a country she lived in as a child…the place she met the boy who would eventually be her husband, 22 years later. After studying both music and English, Scott chose a career teaching English lit and language. But she never lost her desire to perform music…both classical and jazz. ‘Like my protagonist, Julia, music is a part of my structure…the core of who I am. It constantly plays in my head. It must follow then that music infuses what I write. The whole novel, The Song Journey, moves like a piece of music…from the downbeat to the final note.’ Visit T.E. online at and
