Marilyn died in August 1962 – and for over 50 years since her death she remains one of the most iconic Hollywood stars. Mystery surrounds her – was her sudden death the result of an overdose, as “authorities” declared, or was it murder? Was her alleged affair with the President, JFK, fact or just character assassination on the two figures, and if so, who went after them? Stories abound – but how much is fact and how much is fiction?Autographed card from Real Laplaine - author of thrillers

DEAD BUT NOT GONE is a high-concept paranormal thriller with a good dose of romance and even some chuckles. When a cosmic phenomenon passes through Los Angeles one early morning, in fact, directly over Marilyn’s crypt, and while other strange things are happening around the city as a result, bizarre noises emit from her tomb as it begins to shake and finally the door falls to the ground and from it emerges Marilyn, just as beautiful and whole as the day she died. What ensues is a twisted tale as Marilyn discovers that she is alive again. As she learns about her new world she also finds out that the truth of her past life has been buried in lies, especially about the nature of her death, and as she attempts to expose the real story and the people behind it, the thrill ride begins all over again.

Exclusive interview with the author:

1) Why did you write a book about Marilyn Monroe?

I happened to read through a pictoral biography of Marilyn’s life one day, where Marlon Brando made an interesting comment to the effect that if you really believe that one of the most successful women of her time just up and committed suicide one day then think again. It got me thinking, what if Marilyn came back, 50 years after her death and told the world the true story of what really happened. That was the seed for this book.

2) Is it the Marilyn everyone knows or is she different in this story?

I tried to capture the essence of Marilyn, as she was, because I know that millions of people see her in a special way. She is one of the most famous of Hollywood icons so I wanted to retain her qualities, while putting her in a very different circumstance where she suddenly finds herself alive five decades after her death.

3) Does the book have a happy ending?

No spoilers. Let’s just say that it is a thrill ride.

4) How much stretching of the imagination is required? I mean, is it even believable that she comes back again?

I tried to relate, from a scientific viewpoint, how it would be possible for Marilyn to suddenly re-emerge from her tomb, as whole as she was the day she died. It’s up to the reader to determine if it is plausible – but an open mind will see past that issue and take the reader into a new chapter of her life.

5) Does the story do her credit?

One reader said that the story honored her and gave her a new perspective which she deserves – that’s a paraphrase, but I think, in spite of all the twists and turns in the story, all the best of Marilyn shines through.

About the author:

Victor Hugo said … “A writer is a world trapped in a person.”

I write to inspire, to light fires in people, to kick crusty old mediocrity in the head, to help open doors to new worlds, new dimensions, new ideas and ultimately to a better culture and a better world. One where intelligence, creativity and dreams transcend war, hatred and greed. I believe we were meant to aspire to great things – not just to be caretakers for one tiny planet, barely a grain of sand in a universe just waiting to be explored. Visit Réal online at

I became super intrigued with Marilyn Monroe after reading Anthony Summer’s, “Goddess” many a moon ago, it reminds me of Laplaine’s story about the Brando quote. I found the person, the life and the machinations behind the death so fascinating, aside from buying and asking for every MM book for years (most are huge expensive coffee-table variety), I did a whole thesis on the conspiracy behind her death for class one year. Admittedly, I have not been as interested (or obsessively so) in a very long time, maybe partially saturated on the subject, but I love the sound of the twists in this tale, it looks great, thanx for the heads-up!!

The preliminary autopsy determined that Marilyn died of an overdose of barbiturates. Traces of pentobarbital (sleeping pills) were found in her liver, and chloral hydrate in her blood. The reason of Marilyn’s death was identified as a “probable suicide.”
