Tender and heartrending, Jane Yolen’s clear-eyed tale of a child’s effort to rescue a beached whale evokes a fierce love of wildlife and a universal sense of loss.
Exclusive interview with Melanie:
1) We love to learn more about illustrators’ personal lives. What other hobbies and interests do you have?
I like to watch bad horror movies with friends. We usually watch really badly made movies and have fun predicting the scenes. I also play in a competitive kickball league in Worcester, MA – the level of passion that my teammates possess for adult kickball is unmatched!
2) What’s your favorite place to shop?
My favorite place to shop is the grocery store. I always feel accomplished after leaving the grocery store. I think -Yes! I got my lunch for the week! Woo-hoo cheese is on sale! I can make lasagna for dinner!
When I leave a clothing store or trinket shop I usually feel frustrated. In a haze, I think- How do they have every size boot except for my size? Why did I buy this blue elephant candle holder? Where did my money go?
3) What’s your strangest writing quirk or habit? Something that would make all of us go, “huh?”
I usually play Columbo, Roseanne, or Murder She Wrote episodes while I am illustrating. They help me focus.
4) If you could choose one dessert or snack food that you could eat as much as you want of (and never gain an ounce!) what would it be?
Cheese-Its all day.
5) Describe your illustrating space…
Strong lighting, my cat, me, pencils, a computer, and a flat surface. I work in the kitchen or living room of my house. I sometimes work on the floor, the kitchen table, my drawing desk, or the couch.
