Immortal Duncan MacLeod of the Clan Macleod has been alive more than 400 years. He has fought many battles against mortals and Immortals alike through the ages. But now he has a new 20th-century enemy – one who is planning to take more than just immortal heads. Mortal Tessa, the love of Duncan’s life, is his next target with Duncan soon to follow. Immortal’s senses cannot detect him coming – until it is too late.
Exclusive interview with Wendy Jones:
1) How did you get the idea for the novel?
Actually, the characters just ‘present’ themselves in our imaginations. The concept of immortality has always been attractive and exploring the positive and negative aspects of being immortal can be explored, giving the characters a particular depth not found in other characters. Some of these characters were very strong and interesting enough to write stories about them, but they were “killed off” in the show and we felt we needed to bring them back and explore them further.
2) Your characters seem so alive and real… what’s your secret?
They are ‘alive’ in our minds. I see and hear them when the writing is happening.
3) What kind of research did you have to do to bring this story to life on the page?
It takes an exhaustive amount of time and work to research the situations. There are almost as many hours that go into researching the actual historical information as in imagination energy. This is also one of the strongest (and hardest) aspects of this series of stories. As an Immortal, Duncan MacLeod, as well as the other immortal characters, can travel to many places and times. This needs many hours of research on/into many different historical facts, trying to combine fiction and reality. Highlander Imagine Series is a work of fiction, but stories are based on true facts that have been modified a little to fit our story. We have created a website (www.highlanderimagine.com) to help our readers with background information.
4) What about your characters? Do you figure them out entirely before you start writing or do they reveal themselves to you along the way?
The essence of the character is always there from the very beginning, but they can react in surprising ways as we go along in the story. We might put them in different situations and they let us know what they would do in each of them. We can’t write against the characters’ will. If, for example, I have arbitrarily decided that this or that person should go here or there and do something, and that is not the way the ‘character’ wants to go in the story, the story will just suddenly stop – not writer’s block—just mentally stop. The pictures of the scene will not move until the part that is wrong is deleted.
5) Who’s your favorite character in the book and why? Who was the most fun to write?
This Series of books is based on a TV show, so we have the privilege of writing about our favorite characters but we can also create new ones. Duncan, Connor, Richie, Tessa, Joe, Methos, Amanda, Darius are some of the characters we just can’t leave out. Hugh Fitzcairn is has been probably the most fun to write from the show, but Kawill Rockford, an evil immortal we created, will be greatly missed!
