Meet the Boys of Winlock Harbor…
Grayson Cartwright: Golden Boy. Football Prodigy. Troublemaker.
Mike Metzler: Local Heartthrob. Surfer Boy. Hopeless Romantic.
Ian Handler: Army Brat. Musician. King of Sarcasm.
Best friends since they were kids, Grayson, Mike, and Ian were hoping for another epic summer on “The Locks”, filled with clambakes, bonfires, and late-night swims in the ocean.
But that was before Ian’s dad never returned home from his last deployment. Before Mike had to take on more responsibility in order to help provide for his family. Before Grayson’s accident left him with an injured throwing arm and an uncertain future.
It’s clear this summer on the island is shaping up to be very different from those Grayson, Mike, and Ian had come to rely on. And when the sacred code of dating a friend’s sister or ex is broken, it will push their friendship to the absolute limit, testing their loyalties in a way that could either break them—or save them.
Available April 5, 2016 in Paperback, Hardcover, and eBook!
Exclusive interview with the author:
1) How did you get the idea for BOYS OF SUMMER?
This book came about from a couple of different ideas merging together. I had never written from a boy’s point of view before (all of my former books have girl protagonists) and I was always being asked by students at school visits if I was ever going to write a boy protagonist. At the time, I thought, “No way! I have no idea how boys think! I wouldn’t even know where to start.”
Then one day, I was going through my teenage journal, searching for inspiration for a different book and I was flabbergasted by just how boy crazy I was! I would go from crush to crush like
most people flip through TV channels. As I was reading my teenage account of all of these boys and the drama they brought to my life, I couldn’t shake a single question, “What on earth were the BOYS thinking throughout all of this?”
A few months later, I was approached by Simon and Schuster asking if I would be willing to write a contemporary summer beach read from three boys’ point of view. It seemed the stars of inspiration had aligned, so I said yes. And BOYS OF SUMMER was born!
2) If your main characters could give one piece of advice to teenage girls/boys, what would it be?
Okay, here they are. The boys. Dishing out advice. This should be interesting.
Grayson: Your future is never set in stone.
Mike: Let her go.
Ian: Sarcasm is the best defense.
3) If you could have dinner with one of your characters who would it be?
That’s so hard to choose! I love all three of my boys! But I think I’d have to say Ian. And once you read the chapter about the beach date, you’ll know why. Let’s just say he tries to build something called a “love hut” that he found on a cheesy romance blog and it goes terribly wrong.
4) What do you do in your spare time when you’re not writing?
Well, for the next two years, I’m releasing four books a year–BOYS OF SUMMER and A WEEK OF MONDAYS in 2016 and ADDIE BELL’S SHORTCUT TO GROWING UP and an Untitled YA in 2017, plus four secret books that haven’t been announced yet–so I don’t have a TON of free time. 🙂 But when I do, I try to work out, read, and play with my four dogs.
5) If you weren’t a writer, what job would you love to try out?
Blackjack dealer! Or professional poker player. Do I sense a theme here?
