Liz Moretti thought she knew almost everything about her grandmother, Ella – but when Ella passes away and Liz finds a cameo locket with a marriage proposal engraved inside, from a man who was not her grandfather, she realizes that sometimes a person’s secrets are discovered only after they’re gone.
On top of losing Ella, Liz’s career as a jewelry designer is stagnant and her love life lacks sparkle, too. When she reconnects with the one who got away, Liz thinks maybe things are finally starting to look up – but then she meets Justin, the intriguing new guy in her apartment building, and the situation starts to get confusing.
While dealing with her feelings for these two very different men, and generally trying to reinvent her mess of a life, Liz finds answers and solace in Ella’s diary. Eventually, the story of the cameo helps Liz realize she must choose between the life she thought she wanted and the promise of something better.
Exclusive interview with the author:
1) THE LEGACY OF US is a great title! Who came up with it? Was it the original title or did it change along the way?
The original title was THE CAMEO but my publisher thought we needed something a bit jazzier. I’m terrible at titles and agonized over this for a long time. I wanted something that would represent the multiple generations in the book and feel slightly nostalgic. Eventually I made a list of words that had to do with the themes in my book, and “legacy” was one of them. After playing around with the words on the list I got the idea for the title. I sent a list of potential titles to my publisher, and they had a few ideas, too. We came up with a shortlist and THE LEGACY OF US was the winner, so I guess I’m not as bad at titles as I think.
2) Who’s your favorite character in the book and why? Who was the most fun to write?
Gabriella, for sure. Probably because she’s nothing like me, so that made her so much fun to write. I love how she’s so brash and defies the conventions of her time, but deep down she really does have a softer side. People have told me she reminds them of Lady Mary in Downton Abbey which is funny because I’m obsessed with Downton, but I wrote this book before I ever saw the show!
3) How did you get the idea for the novel?
My husband’s grandmother passed away a few years ago and my mother-in-law gave me an antique cameo necklace that belonged to her mom. I was actually looking for a cameo at the time for whatever reason (I think they were trendy that season) and it seemed like fate that I came into possession of such a special one. After talking about the necklace and how we’d never seen it before, my husband and I wondered how old it was and if she’d bought it in Italy, where his family is from. Suddenly the idea for a book was born. At first it was about a necklace and how it ended up in the hands of different people over the years after being sold, passed down, stolen, etc. Eventually I changed my mind and wanted it to be more of a story about the ties of family.
4) Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what do you like to listen to?
I have Spotify playlists for all of my books and I have to say creating them is a great procrastination tool! For THE LEGACY OF US, I listened to a lot of Dashboard Confessional and Dave Matthews Band while writing Liz’s scenes, classical for Gabriella, and some Elvis for Ella.
5) If you weren’t a writer, what job would you love to try out?
I was a drama geek in high school and I’m a huge Broadway/musical theatre fan, so if I could choose any career and actually be good at it, I’d love to perform in Broadway musicals.
