The Grave Winner by Lindsey R. Loucks

3 autographed copies will be given away on Friday, January 22, 2016.

Leigh Baxton is terrified her mom will come back from the dead — just like the prom queen did.

While the town goes beehive over the news, Leigh bikes to the local cemetery and buries some of her mom’s things in her grave to keep her there. When the hot and mysterious caretaker warns her not to give gifts to the dead, Leigh cranks up her punk music and keeps digging.

She should have listened.

Two dead sorceresses evicted the prom queen from her grave to bury someone who offered certain gifts. Bury them alive, that is, then resurrect them to create a trio of undead powerful enough to free the darkest sorceress ever from her prison inside the earth.

With help from the caretaker and the dead prom queen, Leigh must find out what’s so special about the gifts she gave, and why the sorceresses are stalking her and her little sister. If she doesn’t, she’ll either lose another loved one or have to give the ultimate gift to the dead – herself.

Exclusive interview with the author:

1) If you could have one super power what would it be?

Time-travel! Not only would I go back and forth tens, hundreds, thousands of years, but I would also start days all over again so I can actually get something accomplished!

2) Desert Island time. You can bring one person and one thing. What would you bring?

Don’t tell my husband, but I would probably bring Leonardo DiCaprio with me to this deserted island. He’s been stranded a time or two in several of his movies, so he could probably help me out.

As for the one thing I could bring, that would be my Kindle along with a solar charger. (That counts as one thing, right?) That way, I can read ALL THE BOOKS while Leo rubs my feet, I mean tries to get us off the island.

3) The Grave Winner is a great title! Who came up with it? Was it the original title or did it change along the way?

I came up with the title while nearing the end of my very first YA novel (not The Grave Winner). I wondered why anyone would want to win a grave, and once my main character started whispering her story to me, I learned you really, really don’t want to win a grave!

4) What’s your typical celebration ritual when you sell a new book or get exciting news about an existing one? Anything strange or quirky we should know about?

It’s so weird because my list of quirks is normally looooong, but when I get exciting news that’s book-related, I shove it to the side of my brain and focus all my attention on the next book, the next hurdle, the next goal I want to reach. Hi, my name is Lindsey, and I’m an extreme go-getter.

5) Who’s your favorite character in the book and why? Who was the most fun to write?

I really liked being in my main character Leigh’s head because she oozes sass and spunk, and I absolutely loved writing dialog between her and her best friend Jo. They both had some one-liners that still make me giggle. Jo is loosely based on an old high school friend, and some of our real life conversations were so bizarre but so much fun!
