Kody Keplinger returns to the world of The DUFF in this brand-new companion novel!

Sonny Ardmore is an excellent liar. She lies about her dad being in prison. She lies about her mom kicking her out. And she lies about sneaking into her best friend’s house every night because she has nowhere else to go.

Amy Rush might be the only person Sonny shares everything with–secrets, clothes, even a nemesis named Ryder Cross.

Ryder’s the new kid at Hamilton High and everything Sonny and Amy can’t stand–a prep-school snob. But Ryder has a weakness: Amy. So when Ryder emails Amy asking her out, the friends see it as a prank opportunity not to be missed.

But without meaning to, Sonny ends up talking to Ryder all night online. And to her horror, she realizes that she might actually like him. Only there’s one small catch: he thinks he’s been talking to Amy. So Sonny comes up with an elaborate scheme to help Ryder realize that she’s the girl he’s really wanted all along. Can Sonny lie her way to the truth, or will all her lies end up costing her both Ryder and Amy?

Exclusive interview with the author:

1) If your book were to be turned into a movie, would your dream cast be?

If Lying Out Loud were a movie, I’d love to see Sabrina Carpenter from Girl Meets World play Sonny. I think there’s something about her that lets her play confident and sassy while still being vulnerable. I can’t help but imagine her telling all of Sonny’s lies. I think she’d be perfect.

2) When you set out to write a book, are you usually sparked by a story idea or a character?

It’s sort of a combination of both. I usually have a vague idea first. In the case of Lying Out Loud, I thought “I want to tell a story from the point of view of someone who is catfishing another person.” I didn’t know the situation or the motivations. Then came Sonny. I started to hear her voice and began to piece together who she was and why she would do this. So the story and character sort of developed alongside each other.

3) Who’s your favorite character in the book and why? Who was the most fun to write?

Sonny. To both.  She’s different from most of my other characters. Her voice is funny in a way I’d never tried to write before. I loved trying to keep her sense of humor consistent throughout. I loved writing her conversations with Ryder and Amy. She’s easily one of my favorite characters I’ve ever written.

4) What genre have you not yet written but really want to try?

I’d love to write a thriller, actually. I’ve always loved watching true crime documentaries, and I LOVE the work of Gillian Flynn. I’d love to try my hand at something like that one day.

5) Since becoming a writer, what’s the most exciting thing to ever happen to you?

I’ve been so lucky and have had so many exciting things happen throughout my career—from The DUFF movie to meeting my hero, Judy Blume – but honestly? The most exciting thing happened the other day on the subway. I was with a friend, waiting for my train, when I hear a girl say, “Excuse me—Kody?” I turn and two teenage girls were staring at me. They quickly introduced themselves, saying they recognized me from my author photo. They’d both read all of my books and just wanted to tell me how much they’d enjoyed them. It’s the first time I’ve ever been recognized outside of, say, a bookstore. And to have these two girls tell me in person they’d enjoyed my books . . . it was honestly a dream come true. I was giddy the whole ride home.

The story line sounds fun and that was interesting to learn about what sparked it. Sonny has appeal. That is so cute that the girls recognized the author and made her day.

    Thanks for the opportunity.
