Mira the mother of Butterfly, believes she can re-do the past and be with her baby again if she can only find what she is looking for. Emma a twelve year old girl helps Mira see, with a bit of magic, that her baby Butterfly is doing well. That leaves the future up to us when Butterfly is released back into the wild. Will we know the right choice to take?

Exclusive interview with the author:

1) AN ELEPHANT CALLED MIRA is a great title. Was it the original title or did you change it along the way?

At first the title was AN ELEPHANT CALLED MAYA but then I remembered a friend of mine who’s name was Mira and I saw that MIRA could be the nickname for MIRACLE which was much more fun than the original MAYA.

2) When did you start to write? What was your first story about?

In 1997 I had just returned from California caring for my terminally ill parents. My heart was bursting with conflicting emotions – sadness for my parents, exhaustion from caregiving and relief to be home. The only thing I could do was write about my experience with my parents. It was the only activity that brought some sense of wholeness and calm.

3) When you start a new book, do you outline the entire story or fly by the seat of your pants.

I’m usually flying…

4) How did you get the idea for this story?

I had just finished writing with a talented friend of mine, AN ELEPHANT CALLED BUTTERFLY. And I wanted to write a story about our elephants being endangered that was more of a picture book. MIRA looking to re-do the past came to me in a flash while I was meditating.

5) Be honest, how many drafts did you have to write for this book?

I wrote a couple of other short serious stories and threw them away. I saw in my mind’s eye a mother elephant searching in the closet and wrote one draft of the whole MIRA story but tweaked it a lot. The story is always a draft until the French illustrator MARC CHALVIN sends me his amazing drawings…then the story is complete.
