Book #2 in a trilogy from fantasy author Wayne Thomas Batson explores the concept of dreams and their effects on us.
Fourteen-year-old Archer Keaton discovers he has the ability to enter and explore his dreams. He is a dreamtreader, one of three selected from each generation. Their mission: to protect the waking world from the evil lurking in the Dream.
The Nightmare Lord has been thrown down, but his throne is no longer empty. Rigby Thames has taken up the evil mantle with Kara Windchil as his queen. Now the only living dreamtreader, Archer Keaton finds himself on the outside of two worlds looking in. Dream Walking Inc. is taking the world by storm, allowing Rigby to build an unstoppable empire. Worse still, Rigby has unleashed the Tendrils, shadow people who can cross over into the waking world. As Archer’s family and friends begin to disappear, unexpected help comes in the form of the Wind Maiden, a mysterious angelic being who seems to know how Archer can rescue his loved ones and defeat the new Nightmare King. But the cost may prove too dear for Archer to pay.
Exclusive interview with the author:
1) If Oprah invited you onto her show to talk about your book, what would the theme of the show be?
Anchors. I’d invite Max Lucado to be on the show as well since it was the preface of Six Hours One Friday that prompted the idea. In the Dreamtreader books, the main characters need literal anchors to help them keep their place in the turbulent world of the Dream. These anchors must be rooted in significant emotional events or have deep-seeded meaning for the individual, or they simply fail, allowing the Dreamtreader to drift. Today, world culture seems to be losing its foundational anchors, especially here in the United States where we’re constantly edging closer to a “feel good” version of morality. And feelings, as precious as they are to us, are notoriously unreliable as standards. We need anchors or we will drift away to a wasted life or much worse. Jesus is my anchor, and there’s none steadier.
2) Do you listen to music while you write? If yes, what do you like to listen to?
I listen to symphonic rock/metal and trailer music when I write. Both genres have long, sweeping adventurous songs and help put my mind in that “realm of fantasy” context. The trailer music is particularly helpful, sometimes adding just the right melody or mood to a scene.
3) What techniques or tools do you use to keep yourself (and your story) organized?
Scrivener Software by Literature and Latte is a Godsend! For epic fantasy novels, you tend to accumulate hundreds of side characters, cultures, creatures, etc. Easy to forget things, so Scrivener makes it easy to organize, outline, and export drafts. Amazing. I will never write a book without Scrivener.
4) When you set out to write a book, are you usually sparked by a story idea or a character?
Spark is a great word for it. In the muddled, shadowy world of the author’s mind, a glimmering spark will often appear. For me, it’s almost always a story idea, what I call a kernel concept. But it doesn’t take long for the story idea to give birth to characters. When that happens, it’s on!
5) What’s up next for you?
Happy to announce that, in 2015, I will be releasing (God willing) five new books:
- Dreamtreaders 3: War for the Waking World
- GHOST Book 2: Minister of Fire (For older readers)
- Dark Sea Annals books 1-3:
- Sword in the Stars (repub)
- The Errant King (repub)
- Mirror of Souls
Thrilled about all of it. Can’t wait for my readers to fall into these adventures!
